BELINDA CARLISLE BIOGRAPHY

If Belinda Carlisle isn't remembered primarily for being the lead vocalist of the Los Angeles-based Go-Go's it will probably be for her two hit solo recordings, "Mad About You" or "Heaven Is A Place On Earth."

After leaving The Go-Go's, Belinda pursued a solo career. As a soloist, she shed her new-wave psuedo-punk stylings and re-emerged as a polished pop singer. Gone was the chubby cherub-faced vocalist so many Go-Go's fans came to adore and in her place a viable solo hit-maker blossomed.

Her first album, BELINDA, went gold and featured the tune "Mad About You." The tune rocketed to number 3 on the pop charts. What happened next was one of several "misfortunes" to befall I.R.S. Records. Due to a clerical error in Belinda's contract she was able to leave I.R.S. and signed with I.R.S.'s then-distributor, MCA Records. It was the first of several errors of this sort that cost I.R.S. many artists over the next decade and, ultimatley, led to the fall of I.R.S. as a viable self-sufficient label.

In 1987 the first of three albums for MCA followed. HEAVEN ON EARTH was her biggest seller and contained her biggest hit song, "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" and two other top ten singles. Next, RUNAWAY HORSES sold fairly well, but not nearly in the numbers of her previous LPs. Perhaps this was due to a slightly longer than normal delay between releases or perhaps American audiences tastes were changing. Whatever the reason, Belinda was losing her audience and her next LP, 1991's LIVE YOUR LIFE BE FREE, failed to chart or spawn any hit singles. MCA said good-bye and did not renew her contract.

After another solo LP for Virgin (REAL, 1993) failed as well, Belinda and the other Go-Go's reformed the band briefly. In 1996 Belinda recorded yet another LP, A Woman And A Man, for Chrysalis Records. In late 1999 Belinda returned to Miles Copeland and recorded a solo LP for his new label, Ark 21 as well as once again joining her former bandmates in 2000 for a Go-Go's reunion and tour, with a new Go-Go's album released in Spring 2001 (as well as pictorial spread in Playboy Magazine, revealing some of her "other" assets)...
